Air Conditioning Repair
No one wants to make a call for air conditioning repair unless there is no hope that the equipment will work otherwise. In some cases, a unit that doesn't cool is not broken; sometimes it's just in need of some tender loving care. Some investigative work and cleaning may be all that is necessary to go from hot to cool.
It's possible to revive the old condenser unit. However, before taking any steps to repair your air conditioner, or anything else for that matter, make sure of two things. The cold weather should be long gone and the electricity must be disconnected.
Almost every ac unit I have worked on has a power disconnect directly behind the outdoor condenser coils. You can terminate power by switching this off. From this point you should be able to safely complete the following tasks.
First - Look around your outdoor unit. These things are notorious for collecting leaves and debris. Remove any buildup that might prevent the unit from dissipating heat.
Step number two. Remove the outer grille and protective cover. This may be attached to some wires and a fan motor so use great caution when doing this part.
Third - Using either a brush or a powerful stream of water, remove all buildup and debris from the inside of the grill. Don't damage the fins as these are extremely important.
Step number four - Using a hose or a high pressure washer, clean the remaining interior parts. Be sure to cover the electric motor with a plastic bag so you don't short anything out.
Step 5. Check your owner's manual to see if you should oil any movable parts. Use the recommended type of oil, dry off any water on electrical parts, and then reassemble the unit.
Step 6. The last procedure is testing the unit to see if air conditioning repair will be necessary. Set the thermostat to off before turning the breakers back on. Wait five minutes and turn the thermostat back on.
A final sign of life is to check the copper tubes running from your condenser to the house. One should be very cold while the other hot. You may have to remove insulation to do so. If these are working, your ac unit is back in business.
If the unit still does not cool, you may have low refrigerant in the lines and will need to call for air conditioning repair.
Whatever the outcome, make sure to have your ac unit maintained regularly by a well regarded contractor. Scheduled maintenance is vital to your HVAC systems health, just as it is to a cars engine. Most ac repair companies can complete these at minimal out of pocket costs.
